When “-stein” Meets the Wearer

In recent years, Ssstein has steadily become a name to watch in contemporary fashion. Founded by Kiichirō Asakawa—a self-taught designer with a penchant for dissecting vintage garments—the label secured victory at the FASHION PRIZE OF TOKYO 2025 before making its official overseas debut at Paris Men’s Fashion Week on January 21. The collection, aptly titled “Resonance,” reflects Ssstein’s philosophy of finding a special harmony—“ma” in Japanese—between each piece and its wearer.

The word “Ssstein” takes inspiration from the German suffix “-stein,” as in Einstein or Wittgenstein. Asakawa notes that when “-stein” fuses with another term, it becomes something uniquely meaningful—a metaphor for how he hopes his garments gain individuality through those who wear them. From the outset, Ssstein has cultivated a loyal following in Japan through gender-neutral silhouettes, meticulous tailoring, and high-quality materials.

From Vintage Dissection to Paris Debut

Unlike many formal design graduates, Asakawa honed his craft on the retail floor at Harajuku’s well-known select shop Naichichi (ナイチチ) —a six-year immersion that ignited his fascination with how ostensibly similar clothes can look drastically different once worn. He began taking apart iconic vintage pieces (including vintage Levi’s and Ralph Lauren’s ‘80s unlined trench coats) to decode the nuances of construction, fabric behavior, and fit. After Naichichi shuttered in 2016, he opened his own store, Carol, and soon launched Ssstein with a small range of trousers, gradually evolving into a full collection by the time he was invited to Rakuten Fashion Week Tokyo for the 2023-24 AW season. Now 38, Asakawa has brought that hands-on, curious spirit to the Paris stage.

Collection Details: A Grayscale Palette & Meticulous Construction

For its first Paris presentation, Ssstein eschewed lavish theatrics and props. “No gimmick,” Asakawa insists. Instead, he chose a minimal setup that allowed the garments—drawn from an expansive lineup of 130 styles, curated down to 36 final looks—to speak for themselves.

The “Resonance” collection explores how carefully devised cuts and textiles create a subtle yet magnetic dialogue. The collection’s color story centers on a dozen shades of gray—from bone and taupe to deep charcoal—often layered tone-on-tone to showcase textural contrast. As a testament to Asakawa’s relentless fabric research, Ssstein’s hallmark 90/2 wool gabardine and double-woven melton reappear, both engineered to achieve a structured yet supple finish. The gabardine is resin-coated to resist wrinkles and maintain an incredibly smooth hand, while the melton is prized for balancing heft and softness in coats and jackets.
