Graphpaper has set up its SS2027 showroom and a pop-up store in the Marais. The Tokyo label is the work of Takayuki Minami, one of the defining figures behind a generation of Japanese menswear retail.<\/p>

Minami has spent close to thirty years in Tokyo, and he builds systems. In 1996, at twenty, he joined H.P.FRANCE and worked on the launch of CANNABIS and other early-canon select shops, on the buying and store-planning side. In 2008 he set up alpha on his own, and as external director shaped 1LDK \u2014 rethinking the everyday wardrobe for the city, with an unsentimental eye.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

When alpha was incorporated, Minami was at once a brand director, a shopkeeper, and a PR principal. Retail, for him, is something you curate. Hence FreshService in 2013, a pop-up staged as a fictional shipping company; hence Hibiya Central Market later, where food, clothing and barbering share one floor. Clothes never sit on their own in his view \u2014 they are one piece of a larger lifestyle picture. He has said he has no interest in fashion trends; he looks at a garment the way he looks at a vessel or a chair, straight at the object, and then at the gap where something ought to exist and doesn’t.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Graphpaper concept store opened in Aoyama in 2015 and is where this thinking sits whole. The space reads as a gallery: symmetrical, minimal, hangers set into the wall, so each piece is looked at the way you look at art. The clothing line followed a year later. It is not the store’s house line. It is its own brand, with a clean brief \u2014 a well-made wardrobe for adults that doesn’t date.<\/p>

Minami’s phrase for it is “the uncommon ordinary.” After almost ten years, Graphpaper is no longer a label in Japan; it is an ecosystem. What lands in Paris with SS2027, then, is not a season. There is a word in Japanese, keinen rekka<\/em> (\u7d4c\u5e74\u52a3\u5316) \u2014 the gradual wearing-down of things. Graphpaper inverts it: keinen bika<\/em> (\u7d4c\u5e74\u7f8e\u5316), things growing more beautiful with use.<\/p>

Under that frame, garments step back from being finished objects. They become invitations. The cuts are deliberately loose, leaving yohaku<\/em> (\u4f59\u767d), the Japanese sense of blank space, between body and cloth. This is not oversize for its own sake. “Seventy percent of the design is done the moment the fabric is chosen.” Minami’s line has its tactile proof in the room.<\/p>

Even a plain 100% cotton white shirt arrives in two very different answers \u2014 one falls like silk satin, the other is dry and crisp to the hand. The white this season is not industrial white. It is borrowed from ceramic white, with slight shifts in temperature and grain, the way porcelain reads after long use.<\/p>

The palette is matter caught at a moment in time. Moss Green on Stone, the slow spread of moss across rock. Ink Absorbed into Paper Black, the bleed of sumi into fibre. Weathered Wood Beige, timber left long to wind and rain. These are not trend colours. Denim is the piece Graphpaper is best known for. This season it is neither distressed nor reinvented; the work is in details that reward long wear.<\/p>

The straight cut holds, but a few styles now carry side slits \u2014 small openings that ease the stride. The fabric stays the brand’s signature 13.75 oz selvedge, woven slowly on vintage shuttle looms at the century-old Cone Denim mill, with that mill’s characteristic rough surface. Across the rigid base and graded fades, paired through the season’s browns, the line reads grown-up. The intention is clear: clothes built to spend years with the person wearing them, and to be marked by them.<\/p>

Where Minami’s curatorial hand shows clearest is the room itself. This is not a showroom of clothes; it is a lifestyle space, fully composed.<\/p>

Olfactive Studio Ne was commissioned to develop an original room scent and an incense for the space \u2014 the incense in particular is quiet, performs nothing, and would belong in a living room rather than a press preview. Around it: wagashi by OKASHIMARU, keyed to the four seasonal colours; white porcelain vessels by the ceramicist Naotsugu Yoshida (\u5409\u7530\u76f4\u55e3); calligraphy by Daichiro Shinjo (\u65b0\u57ce\u5927\u5730\u90ce).<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Clothes, scent, food, objects \u2014 not a credits list. They are gathered by a single curatorial eye, and they make one argument: time leaves its marks on different materials, and there is a way of looking that gives those marks their due.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

“I’m not after some impossibly large commercial scale, so I try to stay out of mass production and chasing trends \u2014 a fairly Japanese way of working, perhaps,” Minami has said. Graphpaper treats time as a variable of design, not an adversary. It works by subtraction, and it lifts the everyday object to something worth looking at closely.
