Opened in 1946 and situated just steps from the Duomo on Via Spadari, Telerie Spadari Milano<\/a> (TSM) is a landmark for bespoke shirt-making, fine linens, and household textiles. In Italy, the word “telerie” originally referred to high-quality household fabrics, but since the 19th century, it has come to denote prestigious linen shops representing traditional craftsmanship and taste. During Milan’s golden era of the mid-20th century\u2014amidst a boom in consumption and domestic aesthetics\u2014dozens of these “telerie” dotted the city center, particularly around Brera and the Duomo.<\/p>

I first stumbled upon TSM by chance during Fashion Week, immediately drawn in by its three beautiful display windows. Stepping inside, one is immediately captivated by the thousands of patterns and textures lining the shelves. While primarily stocked for their bespoke shirt-making service, these fabrics also attract designers curating their own collections. Nearest to the window lies the iconic selection of Liberty London prints. Known for their Tana Lawn\u2122 Egyptian cotton and vibrant motifs, these fabrics offer an ultra-fine density that is impossibly light and soft to the touch\u2014the perfect choice for spring and summer sleepwear.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

However, it is Carlo Riva\u2014widely considered the finest shirting fabric in the world\u2014that occupies the place of honor on TSM\u2019s shelves. Produced in Como, Carlo Riva is the darling of “old money” connoisseurs. Woven exclusively on vintage wooden shuttle looms, the fabric is instantly recognizable by its width: a mere 90cm, compared to modern standards. The process involves low tension and slow, manual advancement. Once woven, the fabric must rest in a temperature-controlled room for over a year to allow the fibers to naturally “sublimate.” Typically made from top-tier Giza 45 cotton, the result is a fabric with a buttery hand-feel, substantial yet resilient, possessing a depth and luster that is simply unmatched.<\/p>

The collection also features renowned British weaver Thomas Mason. TSM is owned by a historic family from Lake Como\u2014the region universally acknowledged as the “silk and textile capital” of Italy. Like many Italian dynastic families, they remain discreet. Initially, the shop served as a commercial outpost to sell stock from their renowned home textile brand. Unlike many heritage establishments that remain stuck in the past, TSM has embraced a modern strategy while staying family-owned. They frequently collaborate with artists on collections and window displays and maintain an active digital presence. The driving force behind this bridge to the younger generation is Francesca. With a background in architecture and high-end hospitality, she not only manages the store and social media but also guides customers through the nuances of fabrics and patterns.<\/p>

“Everything at TSM is made by us,” Francesca told me. “Every piece is designed in-house, starting from the selection of the fabric. It\u2019s just like fashion\u2014every season, there is a new design to present.” Beyond seasonal collections, clients can commission bespoke pieces suited to their personal taste. I booked an appointment on a weekday morning to have two shirts made. The process allows for complete customization\u2014from the collar and cuff design to the fit (slim or relaxed) and, of course, the essential monogramming. During my visit, a lady was there with her daughter for a fitting. She graciously allowed me to photograph the process as the tailor, Franca, assessed the fit and proportion, pinning minute adjustments. By noon, a young man had arrived for his own appointment. Watching these customers come and go, I realized that for the Milanese, commissioning a bespoke shirt or selecting the perfect bed linen is not an unattainable luxury, but a ritual woven into the fabric of daily life.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Remarkably, despite the passage of time, the shop’s interior remains untouched. The dark herringbone parquet floor has survived since before the Second World War.<\/p>

There is a touching anecdote here: during WWII, as Milan faced heavy bombardment, the original owner\u2014desperate to check on his shop\u2014rode his bicycle all the way from Lake Como to the city center. He arrived to find tragedy\u2014a shop assistant had been killed in the bombing\u2014but he managed to save the store itself.<\/p>
