Azzedine Ala\u00efa\u2019s story began in the 1950s Parisian haute couture world. As one of the last masters to master every step of garment creation\u2014from cutting to design\u2014he dressed icons like Louise de Vilmorin and Greta Garbo, drawing inspiration from their effortless elegance. Carrying forward the golden age of haute couture, Ala\u00efa was famous for cutting directly on models, earning him the nickname \u201cthe designer\u2019s designer\u201d among peers. His extraordinary craftsmanship won over clients and impressed fellow designers like Yves Saint Laurent, who marveled at how he turned the most challenging sketches into reality. In 1979, Thierry Mugler invited him to design tailcoats for the 1979-80 fall\/winter collection, sparking a lasting friendship.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

If Thierry Mugler is the maestro of a futuristic fantasy, Azzedine Ala\u00efa is the quiet artist sculpting fabric into life. Mugler wowed the world with his dramatic runway spectacles\u2014like his 1984 show at Paris\u2019s Zenith arena, where 6,000 spectators watched helicopters create rain for an unforgettable moment. Ala\u00efa, on the other hand, preferred the intimacy of the salon, using scissors to craft flowing curves on models. Yet, this striking duo shared a passion for the perfect silhouette: nipped waists, broad shoulders, and rounded hips\u2014a futuristic twist on Dior\u2019s 1950s \u201cNew Look\u201d and a modern echo of 1930s Hollywood costumes by Adrian. When I asked curator Olivier Saillard how he brought these two distinct visions together, he smiled and said, \u201cThough their styles couldn\u2019t be more different, both celebrate women as goddesses, telling stories of beauty through curves.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Mugler wasn\u2019t just an inspiration for Ala\u00efa\u2014he also played a key role in supporting his career. \u201cI helped him with the admin work and officially set up his brand,\u201d Mugler once shared. In 1982, when New York\u2019s Bergdorf Goodman invited Ala\u00efa to stage a show, the shy Tunisian couturier thought it was a prank\u2014until Mugler stepped in. He took charge of the planning, acted as translator and publicist, and even lent his muse Zuleika to walk the runway. That summer, they spent time at their mutual friend Leila Menchari\u2019s home in Tunisia, soaking up the sunlight on white walls as they dreamed up bold design ideas. With Mugler\u2019s encouragement, Ala\u00efa launched his first ready-to-wear collection in 1982, becoming a mentor to supermodels like Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, and Farida Khelfa. Khelfa even attended the preview to show her support.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The exhibition reveals for the first time 40 Mugler pieces from Ala\u00efa\u2019s private collection, including the metallic armor dress photographed in Monte Carlo in 1984\u2014its silver shimmer evoking a futuristic warrior\u2014displayed next to Ala\u00efa\u2019s bandage-knit dress, which hugs the body like a second skin, soft yet striking. Mugler reflected, \u201cSince we met, my designs have become more grounded, letting the body feel at ease, and his have grown more bold\u2026 I believe that with me, Azzedine Ala\u00efa was able to free himself, let\u2019s say, to explore tailoring with more ergonomic and flowing lines.\u201d<\/p>

Standing in the gallery, admiring these masterpieces side by side, I\u2019m struck by the stunning craftsmanship of 1980s ready-to-wear\u2014silks that flow like water, leather with a subtle strength, and stitches as delicate as haute couture. But what truly touches me is the creative friendship of mutual support and inspiration between Manfred Mugler and Azzedine Ala\u00efa. In today\u2019s algorithm-driven era, where designers often rush through quick iterations, Ala\u00efa and Mugler\u2019s story feels like a quiet reminder: true fashion revolutions are born from unreserved trust and collision\u2014a legacy that belongs to them and to us.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
