High above the reception room at A.Caraceni hangs Moroni\u2019s celebrated painting, The Tailor<\/em>. In the 16th century\u2014the era when this work was created\u2014only religious figures or influential patrons were deemed worthy of occupying the center of a canvas. Yet Moroni chose to feature a young tailor of modest social standing. Impeccably dressed and strikingly handsome, he holds a pair of scissors in his right hand and fabric in his left, his determined, slightly proud gaze meeting that of the viewer beyond the frame.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

When I asked Max (Massimiliano Andreachhio Caraceni, the fourth generation of this storied tailoring house) to pose for a photograph, he stood beneath Moroni\u2019s The Tailor<\/em>, his confident gaze echoing that of the craftsman in the painting above\u2014two tailors, centuries apart, yet linked by their proud in the craft.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

As one of Italy\u2019s most emblematic tailoring houses, A.Caraceni has long served political and business elites. Its meticulous craftsmanship and measured approach have made it the first choice for fashion leaders and style icons across generations\u2014from Karl Lagerfeld and the Loro Piana family to Gianni Agnelli and Calvin Klein. Max, the fourth-generation scion, began his apprenticeship at A.Caraceni at the age of 18; by the time we met, he had already devoted twenty years of his life to the craft.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Leading me through a reception room laid with a red carpet, Max guided me into the workshop housed in the same building. There, a host of youthful faces moved about: some were busy sewing interlinings for lapels, others meticulously stitching buttonholes. These new-generation tailors from around the globe barely spared a glance for me, the curious interloper. While many artisanal brands lament the scarcity of skilled apprentices and veteran craftsmen\u2014resulting in dwindling operations and even shuttered doors\u2014A.Caraceni enjoys a steady flow of talent.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Diana Vreeland once mused in her memoir, \u201cBefore the war, a dressing gown was tried on three times\u2026 After the war, people no longer tried on dressing gowns.\u201d In many cultures, bespoke clothing was once the norm; today, that experience seems remote to most. Every era convinces itself that it has witnessed the decline of fashion. A person from a century ago might be shocked by today\u2019s casual, rough-edged street style. But is this truly the fall of fashion? Rather than a decline, it signals a broader democratization of style\u2014one where tradition and modernity coexist. Some opt for a bespoke suit paired with New Balance 990 sneakers; others wear a Comme des Gar\u00e7ons jacket with an unconventional cut. In an age when everyone can be a designer or stylist, what future remains for a traditional establishment like A.Caraceni? A (Agnes):<\/b> How many tailors are currently working in the workshop?\u00a0<\/p>

M (Massimiliano):<\/b> At the moment, we have 29 tailors in total.<\/p>

A:<\/b> Are they all working in the back workshop?<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

M:<\/b> Aside from five veteran tailors\u2014longtime members who now work from home after retirement\u2014the rest are here with us. In this space, we adhere to traditional methods: hardly any machines, entirely handmade.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

A:<\/b> Regarding the cutters: your father was the head cutter, and you were once the second cutter, correct?<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

M:<\/b> I\u2019m now the head cutter. Of course, my father is still with us, but gradually, my workload has increased. Just last Sunday, I celebrated my twentieth year at A.Caraceni.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

A:<\/b> You began working here at 18, in 2004. That\u2019s quite remarkable for someone your age.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

M:<\/b> If you think about it, I\u2019ve dedicated more than half my life to this craft. For the first seven years, I solely practiced needlework, learning the basics of constructing a suit jacket. Then, my father finally told me, \u201cNow you can step into the cutting room and meet clients.\u201d<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

A:<\/b> Is the cutter\u2019s domain separate from that of the tailor?<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

M:<\/b> Yes. In this reception room, we take measurements for our clients; only the cutters\u2014those responsible for drafting the patterns\u2014interact directly with them. For the following 13 years, I worked exclusively in the cutting room.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

A:<\/b> I know of a Japanese tailor named Satoki, who worked here for many years. He once said that the hardest part was learning to draft patterns\u2014the very work of a cutter.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

M:<\/b> Exactly. We have a proprietary secret in pattern-making that no one else can replicate unless they learn it firsthand (laughs). Only the A.Caraceni family holds this technique.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

A:<\/b> How long did it take you to master these skills?<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

M:<\/b> Technically, it\u2019s not the most challenging part\u2014you could follow a pattern-making book. The real difficulty lies in the fact that every body is different. If a client has uneven shoulders, solving that issue might trigger two or three new complications. The toughest part is finding the right solution for each individual client. It takes years of practice and excellent mentorship. The initial pattern is like the foundation of a building\u2014only on that do we construct the entire suit. A: How would you describe the style of A.Caraceni?<\/b><\/b><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

M:<\/b><\/span> Honestly, I\u2019m not fond of defining it as \u201cour style.\u201d My great-grandfather, Augusto Caraceni, came from Ortona, a small town in central Italy, where his family had a long tailoring tradition. He first opened a shop in Rome, then spent several years in Naples, later moved to Paris, and finally settled in Milan. In the past, when travel was difficult, each city had its distinct tailoring style\u2014Neapolitans dressed differently from Milanese, and London and Paris each had their own aesthetic. But today, with travel being so effortless, almost all styles have blended together.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

A:<\/b><\/span> I didn\u2019t know Caraceni once operated in Naples.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

M:<\/b><\/span> The Caraceni family history is long. Originally, the eldest son, Domenico, left Ortona to open a shop in Rome. My great-grandfather Augusto and his brother Galliano joined him and attempted to expand into Naples, but at the time, the tailoring market there was already highly competitive. They soon realized it wasn\u2019t the right path. Eventually, Domenico moved to Milan, Galliano stayed in Rome, and in 1931, my great-grandfather Augusto established A.Caraceni under his own name in Paris.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

That\u2019s why his approach blended different suit-making traditions. It\u2019s not strictly \u201cMilanese\u201d or \u201cBritish,\u201d but a refined synthesis. The advantage of an A.Caraceni suit is that it looks impeccable no matter where you are. Some Neapolitan styles are excellent but best suited to their local environment, just as certain British suits look most natural in central London.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

A:<\/b><\/span> Do you think suit styles are still as distinct today? Everything seems much more globalized.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

M:<\/b><\/span> Yes, though Naples may be somewhat of an exception. Some old-school Neapolitan tailors strike the perfect balance, creating garments that clearly reflect Neapolitan craftsmanship without over-exaggeration. But some, in their eagerness to promote the Neapolitan suit, overemphasize certain features\u2014like shoulder lines so soft they resemble a shirt\u2019s \u201cwaterfall shoulder\u201d (spalla camicia<\/i>). I believe tailors like Panico and Rubinacci create styles that work anywhere in the world, but there are some whose designs feel right only in Naples\u2014I won\u2019t name names.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A.Caraceni is a family business. Max\u2019s father, Carlo Andreachhio, manages nearly every aspect of the shop, while his mother, Rita Maria Caraceni, and his sister oversee finances and operations. There\u2019s a saying that one\u2019s attire reflects one\u2019s character. Carlo\u2019s dress sense is meticulous\u2014a masterful coordination of colors and patterns. In contrast, Max\u2019s style is more relaxed. He rarely wears a tie, aiming to shatter the stereotype that a tailor\u2019s shop means only elderly gentlemen in formal attire. \u201cMy father dresses impeccably; I want to show that a bespoke suit isn\u2019t reserved solely for formal occasions.\u201d<\/p>
